BOARD MEMBERS WANTED
The Thompson Orchard Community Association (TOCA) needs 3-6 volunteers to join the Board of Directors, in order to continue full operations. Open positions include Chair, and Social and Communications Committees. Without additional volunteers stepping forward, it is likely that TOCA will need to suspend activities for the coming year.
Please consider joining so we can continue our strong tradition of fostering community engagement, social connection, and harmony in our special neighbourhood.
CHEMICAL SPILL in MIMICO CREEK
An August 11th industrial fire at the Brenntag Canada facility in North Etobicoke resulted in a disastrous petroleum-based chemical spill into Mimico Creek and the Humber River, causing significant damage to the local wildlife and environment. According to Ontario’s Ministry Of Environment, Conservation, and Parks, crews are expected to remain on site until October. For the most up-to-date information on the cleanup, contact the ministry’s Toronto District Office Duty Line at 416-326-3381 during business hours; or after-hours call the ministry’s Pollution Hotline at 1-866-663-8477. If you spot affected wildlife, contact the Toronto Wildlife Centre at 416-631-0662.
Members of TOCA have contacted both the Ontario Minister of Environment, David Piccini David.Piccini@pc.ola.org as well as Councillor Morley to express our concern about this situation and to ask for improved updates and communication. We encourage all residents who share concerns, to do the same.
VAN DUSEN BRIDGE
After extensive follow-up and involvement from Thompson Orchard and Lora Hill community members over safety concerns regarding the use of the bridge by motorized vehicles, the City has begun a landscape project on both sides of the bridge.
The intention of the landscaping is to ensure that the bridge does not look like a continuation of the road thus deterring fast- moving motorized vehicles from using it.
We thank everyone who helped to push for this change.
Thank you.
